Drug Detox London: What to Expect in Your First Week
Deciding to begin a drug detox is a significant and courageous step. If you’re considering drug detox in London, it’s important to know what to expect during your first week. At TLC Rehab, we offer medically supervised detox and round-the-clock care to help our clients take control of their lives in a safe, supportive environment.
Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect during your first seven days of drug detox London treatment with us.
Pre-Admission Screening & Assessment
Once you have made the decision to enter treatment, you will complete our online pre-admission form, where you tell us about you and your needs. A Nurse will then call you for a pre-admission screening assessment, so that we can identify any potential risks and start to plan care. We will go through what to bring and provide re-assurance to you and your family.
Day 1: Admission & Medical Assessment
Your journey begins with a warm welcome and comprehensive medical assessment, our clinical team will ask questions about your physical and mental health, drug history, and lifestyle, this will include drug and alcohol screening, vital signs monitoring and specialist alcohol and drug detox withdrawal assessments. This allows us to design a tailored drug and or alcohol detox plan that meets your specific needs. You will start receiving medication as soon as you need it, to prevent you from having significant withdrawal symptoms.
Days 2 – 3: Stabilisation
It is commonly known that the first 72 hours of detox is the most critical. Our job at this time is to stabilise you on the detox medication, whilst continuing to monitor your vital signs and assessing symptoms of withdrawal, giving additional medication if required. We assist you to hydrate and eat regularly, alongside as much rest as you need. If you feel comfortable, we encourage you to start attending some of the group work sessions that are provided, and you will touch base with your Counsellor to start planning your goals for treatment.
Once stabilised, your detox will begin under medical supervision. You may experience withdrawal symptoms depending on the substance, your usage history, and your general health. Common symptoms include:
- Anxiety or low mood
- Sleep disruption
- Headaches or body aches
- Cravings
- Digestive discomfort
Medication may be prescribed to ease symptoms and ensure a safe, manageable process.
Days 4 – 5: Physical & Emotional Shifts
As your body adjusts, you’ll start to feel clearer—though emotional ups and downs are common. Our therapeutic team will begin working with you through early sessions, including:
- One-to-one counselling
- Emotional support from trained staff
- Light activity and rest to support physical recovery
This phase is critical in laying the groundwork for long-term healing.
Days 6- 7: Building Routine & Engagement
By the end of your first week of drug deto, you’ll likely be engaging more fully in group therapy, creative sessions, and personalised recovery planning. You’ll start:
- Developing new coping mechanisms
- Understanding the roots of your addiction
- Planning your next steps after detox (whether staying for rehab or exploring other supports)
Many of our clients report feeling stronger and more hopeful by the end of their first week.
