Am I Addicted to Alcohol? Signs, Self-Assessment & Next Steps

Am I Addicted to Alcohol? A Self-Assessment Guide

Alcohol is a common part of social life, but for some, drinking can become more than just a habit—it can turn into dependence. If you’ve ever questioned your relationship with alcohol, this guide will help you assess whether you may have an addiction.

At TLC Rehab, we specialise in alcohol detox and rehabilitation, offering professional support to those who need it. If you recognise signs of addiction in yourself or a loved one, seeking help early can make all the difference.

Self-Assessment: Am I Addicted to Alcohol?

Ask yourself the following questions. If you answer “yes” to several of them, it may be time to seek support.

1. Do I drink more than I intend to?

  • Have you ever planned to have just one or two drinks but ended up drinking more?
  • Do you struggle to stop once you start?

2. Have I tried to cut down but failed?

  • Have you made attempts to reduce or stop drinking but found it difficult?
  • Do you experience frustration or disappointment when you can’t control your drinking?

3. Do I drink to cope with stress, anxiety, or emotions?

  • Do you use alcohol to relax, escape problems, or numb emotions?
  • Do you rely on drinking to feel better in social situations?

4. Do I experience withdrawal symptoms when I don’t drink?

  • Do you feel anxious, shaky, or irritable when you haven’t had alcohol?
  • Have you experienced physical withdrawal symptoms like sweating, nausea, or trouble sleeping?

5. Is alcohol affecting my daily life?

  • Has drinking caused issues in relationships, work, or finances?
  • Have you missed responsibilities due to hangovers or drinking?

6. Do I hide or lie about my drinking?

  • Do you drink alone or in secret?
  • Do you downplay the amount you drink when asked?

7. Have I built a tolerance to alcohol?

  • Do you need more alcohol than before to feel the same effects?
  • Has your drinking increased over time?

8. Do I feel guilty or ashamed about my drinking?

  • Do you often regret your drinking habits or behaviour when drinking?
  • Have family or friends expressed concern about your alcohol use?

What Your Answers Mean

If you answered “yes” to three or more of these questions, you may be developing a dependence on alcohol. If you answered “yes” to five or more, it could indicate an alcohol addiction that requires professional support.
