For many people, prescription medications are part of a trusted healthcare plan. They are recommended by doctors, dispensed by pharmacists and used to treat legitimate conditions. But increasingly, these medications are being misused, and dependence can spiral into prescription drug addiction before someone even realises it.
At TLC, we regularly support guests who never expected to end up in rehab. They didn’t start with party drugs or alcohol, but with painkillers, sleeping tablets or anxiety medication. And yet, the impact of addiction can be just as devastating.
In this blog, we explore how prescription drug addiction develops, what signs to look for and how TLC helps people take back control of their lives.
What Is Prescription Drug Addiction?
Prescription drug addiction occurs when a person becomes dependent on medication prescribed by a healthcare professional. It can affect anyone – from busy professionals to parents managing chronic pain, to elderly individuals who have been on certain medications for years.
Some of the most commonly misused prescription drugs include:
- Opioid painkillers (e.g. codeine, tramadol, morphine)
- Benzodiazepines (e.g. diazepam, lorazepam)
- Sleeping tablets (e.g. zopiclone)
- Stimulants (e.g. medications for ADHD)
Even when taken as prescribed, these medications can lead to dependency. The problem arises when tolerance builds, withdrawal symptoms appear and the person continues using the drug to feel normal rather than to treat the original condition.
How Does It Start?
For many of our clients, prescription drug addiction began innocently. A painkiller was prescribed after surgery or injury. A sleeping tablet was given during a stressful life event. Or an anti-anxiety medication was taken to cope with panic attacks.
Over time, the body can become reliant on these drugs to function. The dosage may need to be increased to achieve the same effect, or people may start taking them more often than prescribed. When the medication runs out, they may seek more – sometimes from multiple doctors or even illegal sources.
Signs of Prescription Drug Addiction
Recognising the signs of prescription drug addiction can be difficult, especially when the drug was originally prescribed. However, common warning signs include:
- Taking more than the prescribed dose
- Using medication to manage emotional distress, not just physical symptoms
- Changes in sleep, mood or energy levels
- Secretive behaviour or dishonesty around use
- Doctor shopping or forging prescriptions
- Anxiety about running out of medication
- Withdrawal symptoms when the drug is stopped
If any of these sound familiar, it may be time to seek help.
The Dangers of Ignoring It
Left untreated, prescription drug addiction can lead to serious physical and psychological harm. These medications can impair judgement, damage organs, reduce cognitive ability and increase the risk of overdose – especially when combined with alcohol or other drugs.
There is also the emotional toll. Many of the people we support at TLC describe feeling ashamed or confused by their situation. They often feel isolated or guilty, as if they should have had more control.
We want people to know there is no shame in needing help.
How TLC Helps People Recover
At TLC, we provide a residential, non 12-step treatment programme specifically designed to support people through detox and recovery from prescription drug addiction.
Our approach is personalised and trauma-informed, with a focus on healing the whole person. It includes:
- A medically supported detox, if needed
- 1:1 therapy to explore emotional and psychological roots of addiction
- Group therapy sessions for peer support and shared growth
- Holistic therapies such as yoga, massage and meditation
- Aftercare guidance to support long-term recovery
We believe in meeting people where they are – without judgement – and helping them build the tools for sustainable sobriety.
Moving Forward With Confidence
Recovering from prescription drug addiction is not about going back to how life was before the medication. It’s about moving forward with greater self-awareness, clarity and support.
Many of our guests leave with a new sense of identity and freedom. They no longer feel dependent on pills to get through the day, and they develop healthy coping strategies that serve them far better than any tablet ever could.
